Participación en la 1.ª Conferencia Europea sobre Pequeñas Explotaciones Forestales en la FAO, Roma
Del 20 al 22 de mayo de 2025, tuvimos la ocasión de asistir a la 1.ª Conferencia Europea sobre Pequeñas Explotaciones Forestales, celebrada en la sede de la FAO en Roma. Este evento, organizado en el marco del proyecto SMURF (Sustainable Management Models and Value Chains for Small Forests) y financiado por Horizonte Europa, reunió a más de 200 participantes entre propietarios forestales, investigadores, responsables políticos, asociaciones y ONG de toda Europa.
La conferencia ofreció un espacio único para debatir sobre los retos y oportunidades de las pequeñas explotaciones forestales. Durante los tres días de sesiones, se abordaron temas clave como la gestión forestal sostenible, la rentabilidad de los pequeños bosques, la cooperación entre propietarios, y la creación de cadenas de valor locales basadas en productos y servicios forestales. También se compartieron experiencias sobre la legislación nacional y europea, así como modelos innovadores de apoyo a los propietarios forestales.
Uno de los aspectos más destacados fue la discusión sobre la fragmentación de la propiedad forestal y la importancia de promover redes de colaboración que permitan gestionar los bosques de manera sostenible y eficiente. En la última jornada, se presentó LAURUS Network, una iniciativa que busca conectar a pequeños propietarios, investigadores y gestores forestales para facilitar el intercambio de buenas prácticas, promover la innovación en gestión sostenible y fortalecer la cooperación a nivel europeo.
Nuestra asistencia a esta conferencia no solo nos permitió conocer de primera mano las mejores prácticas y tendencias en el sector, sino también fortalecer vínculos con otros actores dentro del sector y explorar oportunidades de colaboración futura. Esta experiencia nos sirve de motivación para continuar trabajando en la gestión sostenible de nuestros bosques, promoviendo modelos que equilibren la productividad, la conservación y el valor social de los recursos forestales, a la vez que refuerza nuestro compromiso con la innovación y la sostenibilidad en el manejo de las pequeñas explotaciones forestales en Europa y nos anima a seguir participando activamente en iniciativas que fomenten un futuro más verde y resiliente.
Participation in the 1st European Conference on Small Forest Holdings at FAO, Rome
From May 20 to 22, 2025, we had the opportunity to attend the 1st European Conference on Small Forest Holdings, held at the FAO headquarters in Rome. This event, organized within the framework of the SMURF project (Sustainable Management Models and Value Chains for Small Forests) and funded by Horizon Europe, brought together more than 200 participants, including forest owners, researchers, policymakers, associations, and NGOs from across Europe.
The conference provided a unique platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities of small forest holdings. Over three days of sessions, key topics were addressed such as sustainable forest management, profitability of small forests, cooperation among owners, and the creation of local value chains based on forest products and services. Experiences regarding national and European legislation, as well as innovative support models for forest owners, were also shared.
One of the highlights was the discussion on forest property fragmentation and the importance of promoting collaborative networks that enable sustainable and efficient forest management. On the final day, LAURUS Network was presented—an initiative aimed at connecting small forest owners, researchers, and forest managers to facilitate the exchange of best practices, promote innovation in sustainable management, and strengthen cooperation at the European level.Attending this conference not only allowed us to learn firsthand about the best practices and trends in the sector but also to strengthen ties with other stakeholders and explore opportunities for future collaboration. This experience motivates us to continue working on the sustainable management of our forests, promoting models that balance productivity, conservation, and social value of forest resources, while reinforcing our commitment to innovation and sustainability in managing small forest holdings in Europe and encouraging active participation in initiatives that foster a greener and more resilient future
