Desde el mes de octubre de 2024, nuestra organización participa activamente en la 1ª convocatoria del proyecto SMURF (Sustainable Management models and valUe chains foR small Forests), iniciativa coordinada por la Fundación CESEFOR y financiada principalmente con fondos de la Unión Europea en el marco del programa Horizonte Europa (Horizon Europe).
El objetivo de esta primera fase consiste en realizar un análisis detallado de los modelos organizativos de distintas asociaciones de pequeños propietarios forestales en varios países europeos, así como de sus sistemas de gestión, retos jurídicos, tipos de bosque, oportunidades empresariales y necesidades de apoyo. Todo ello persigue la identificación de un enfoque que contribuya a mejorar la rentabilidad de las pequeñas explotaciones forestales sin perder de vista los principios de sostenibilidad, conservación de la biodiversidad y resiliencia frente al cambio climático.
Las actividades previstas se articulan en torno a varias líneas de trabajo prioritarias:
- Recopilación de información sobre el terreno, mediante encuestas, entrevistas y análisis de fuentes primarias y secundarias, que permitan identificar las tipologías de bosques predominantes, las prácticas de gestión forestal en uso, las particularidades del marco legal y los sistemas de apoyo existentes para los pequeños propietarios.
- Promoción de la diversidad geográfica, garantizando la inclusión de múltiples regiones y contextos socioeconómicos de Europa, con el fin de reflejar la gran heterogeneidad de condiciones físicas, jurídicas y de gobernanza que afectan a los bosques de pequeña escala.
- Impulso al intercambio de conocimiento y a la creación de redes, facilitando la interacción entre organizaciones de propietarios, actores locales y entidades de apoyo, de manera que se visibilicen sus experiencias y se conviertan en aportaciones útiles para el diseño de nuevos modelos de gestión, instrumentos de apoyo institucional y mecanismos innovadores como los pagos por servicios ecosistémicos (PSE).
Con nuestra modesta participación, aspiramos a contribuir al desarrollo de un marco de referencia europeo que nos permita a los pequeños propietarios forestales fortalecer nuestra posición en las cadenas de valor, incrementar la sostenibilidad de nuestras actividades y participar de forma más efectiva en los mercados ambientales emergentes.
Since October 2024, our organization has been actively participating in the 1st call of the SMURF project (Sustainable Management models and valUe chains foR small Forests), an initiative coordinated by the CESEFOR Foundation and primarily funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.
The objective of this first phase is to carry out a detailed analysis of the organizational models of different associations of small forest owners in various European countries, as well as their management systems, legal challenges, forest types, business opportunities, and support needs. The ultimate goal is to identify an approach that contributes to improving the profitability of small-scale forest holdings while maintaining the principles of sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and resilience in the face of climate change.
The planned activities are structured around several priority lines of work:
- Collection of field information, through surveys, interviews, and the analysis of primary and secondary sources, to identify the predominant forest types, current forest management practices, the specific characteristics of the legal framework, and the existing support systems available to small owners.
- Promotion of geographical diversity, ensuring the inclusion of multiple regions and socio-economic contexts across Europe, in order to capture the wide heterogeneity of physical, legal, and governance conditions affecting small-scale forests.
- Fostering knowledge exchange and network building, by facilitating interaction between owners’ organizations, local actors, and support entities, thereby making their experiences visible and transforming them into valuable contributions for the design of new management models, institutional support instruments, and innovative mechanisms such as payments for ecosystem services (PES).
Through our modest participation, we aim to contribute to the development of a European reference framework that will enable small forest owners to strengthen their position in value chains, enhance the sustainability of their activities, and participate more effectively in emerging environmental markets.
